Opportunity

As AI accelerates the physical buildout of the cloud, Microsoft needed its next generation of critical infrastructure to scale capacity without scaling embodied carbon.

Data centers have quickly become critical utilities for the world’s cities due to the booming demand for computing power, generative AI, and other advanced technologies. To keep up, data providers are building these facilities at a rapid clip. One key challenge developers face is the amount of energy required to power these massive computing centers. Without new innovations, they will continue to generate unsustainable amounts of carbon. The opportunity was not simply to make two facilities more sustainable, but to challenge the concrete-and-steel conventions of hyperscale construction.

Why This Matters

  1. 01

    Decarbonize at Hyperscale

As Microsoft expands datacenter capacity, every new facility must help close the gap between growing digital demand and the company’s long-term carbon commitments.

  2. 02

    Protect Speed to Market

Hyperscale infrastructure moves on compressed schedules. Microsoft needed lower-carbon construction strategies that could support performance and resilience without compromising the speed required to add capacity.

  3. 03

    Design for People Too

Microsoft saw an opportunity to bring warmth, natural materiality, and well-being into an intensely technical environment.

Solution

Instead of treating concrete and steel as fixed rules, the design recasts the hyperscale data center as a hybrid mass-timber prototype.

To make data centers more sustainable, Microsoft has turned to mass timber construction because of its potential to significantly reduce carbon emissions. Gensler partnered with Thornton Tomasetti to build two groundbreaking mass timber hyperscale data centers for the company in Virginia. The facilities will also feature a new look and feel for both interiors and exteriors that celebrate the use of timber and create an environment of wellness for their employees.

What Changed Because of This

  1. 01

    Cabon Reduction Blueprint

The hybrid system shifts embodied carbon from an accepted cost of rapid expansion into a design variable Microsoft can actively reduce at scale.

  2. 02

    Timber Mainstreamed

By proving CLT at hyperscale, Microsoft can use its purchasing power and project pipeline to expand demand for lower-carbon materials and specialized expertise.

  3. 03

    Experience Humanized

Exposed timber, reclaimed wood, sustainable furnishings, and biophilic cues bring warmth to employee spaces within a building type traditionally dominated by machinery.

FAQ

01

What are Microsoft’s Mass Timber Hyperscale Data Centers?

They are two hyperscale data center facilities in Northern Virginia designed by Gensler in partnership with Thornton Tomasetti using a hybrid mass timber construction approach.

02

Why is Microsoft using mass timber for data centers?

Mass timber reduces reliance on carbon-intensive steel and concrete while offering advantages associated with offsite prefabrication, including faster and safer onsite installation.

03

What is cross-laminated timber?

Cross-laminated timber, or CLT, is an engineered wood product made by layering timber in alternating directions to create strong, stable structural panels.

04

How much does the design reduce embodied carbon?

Microsoft estimates the hybrid system will reduce embodied carbon by 35% compared with conventional steel construction and 65% compared with typical precast concrete.
