Overview
The New York Times’ workplace reflects the newspaper’s evolution, placing its glass-enclosed newsrooms at street level to engage the public with breaking-news energy.
Opportunity
Transparent news reporting is essential to the success of media companies like The New York Times Company.
Gensler collaborated with The New York Times and the base building architects to create an iconic work environment that would serve the paper's needs for productivity, efficiency, and user customizability while reflecting the same aesthetic values as the base building design. This new space brings most of the Times's Manhattan-based employees together under one roof. Floors 2 through 7 house the newsroom, with the three lower podium floors overlooking the ground-floor interior garden court. Three mid-tower floors are home to the double-height cafeteria, conference center, and boardroom.

Gensler performed an extensive building design consultation study, achieving real estate potential in terms of building capacity functionality. Many of these modifications resulted in significant efficiencies gained.
02
Integrated Base Building & Interior Design
Though the planning strategy maintains rigorous design guidelines, the interiors are highly customized to enhance functionality and accommodate the diverse needs of the building's occupants.
03
Enhancing Workplace Culture
The design reflects the value of the company and their role in the community, while also enhancing workplace culture and productivity by breaking down barriers between upper management and staff.

Solution
A visible organization to the public, The New York Times’ former facility lacked a sense of openness and community, which became important design principles for the new headquarters.
The Times challenged the design team to develop a comprehensive, harmonic, and timeless design that would embody the future of The New York Times brand. The Times provided the design team with numerous opportunities to consult with researchers and industry leaders and new technologies were developed for the project, including a daylight controlled dimmable lighting system, a daylight controlled motorized shading system, an underfloor air distribution system, a perforated carpet
