Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) faced a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform Toronto’s BMO Field into an internationally recognized stadium.
Since 2007, BMO Field has grown alongside Canada’s love of soccer. But preparing the stadium for the 2026 FIFA World Cup posed a whole new set of challenges, as the international event required increased capacity, renewed hospitality spaces, and the adoption of the latest technology to elevate the experience for in-person and broadcast audiences alike. With more than one billion fans watching around the planet, BMO Field had to perform as a world class venue, and stand as a testament to Canada’s love of the game.

Fan Experience
Improving the experience for in-person and remote fans alike was imperative for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Every seat, suite, and sightline had to provide a view of the action.

To maximize attendance, BMO Field required a 17,000-person temporary grandstand expansion and two levels of private suites.

Hospitality Improvements
First impressions matter. It’s why BMO Field had to feature the spaces and amenities local and travelling fans have come to expect from the best stadiums in the world.

Solution
To improve the fan experience, the design team took lessons from the hospitality industry.
New hospitality spaces — including the addition of 33 private suites, a new premium centre field lounge, an expanded full-service kitchen, and refreshed washrooms — elevate the experience for every fan. But it doesn't stop there: the stadium also includes self-serve technology, including generative AI and computer vision at select concession stands. To bring fans closer to the action, the stadium added four new LED videoboards, enhanced AV systems, and upgraded LED sports lighting.
