Opportunity

As investors, customers, and employees push energy companies toward sustainability, Chevron needed a headquarters that could unite its workforce under one shared roof.

Energy workplaces are under growing pressure to prioritise flexibility, wellness, and sustainability, with large campuses now favouring modular designs that support hybrid work and adaptable space. For Chevron, this meant more than a design refresh; it meant physically reuniting over 1,500 employees under one roof for the first time in a decade, consolidating teams supporting the Gorgon and Wheatstone projects. As global incentives drive investment in carbon-free energy, Chevron needed a headquarters that reflected that same shift toward a more sustainable, connected future.

Why This Matters

  1. 01

    Reuniting the Workforce

For the first time in a decade, Chevron brought over 1,500 employees back under one roof, a critical step in rebuilding a shared sense of company culture.

  2. 02

    Sustainability as Strategy

With investor and employee pressure mounting, Chevron's headquarters needed to prove sustainability commitments through design, not just policy, achieving WELL Platinum and 6-Star Green Star ratings.

  3. 03

    Honouring Place

A generic global headquarters risked disconnecting Chevron from Western Australia itself, making Indigenous heritage and local materials essential to genuine community trust.

Our project team worked hard to provide a workplace centred on the wellbeing of our people and supports diversity and inclusion, recognising our sense of place at Gumap, Elizabeth Quay.

Solution

The answer was consolidation with purpose: one 20-floor headquarters uniting Chevron's workforce around wellness, Indigenous heritage, and Western Australian identity.

Spanning 20 floors, Chevron's Perth headquarters prioritises sustainability, wellness, and cultural connection at every scale. World-class amenities and ergonomic workspaces support a genuinely health-focused environment, while extensive Indigenous art collections embed local culture throughout the building. Repurposed materials, including Bunbury Jetty timbers and Barrow Island core samples, ground the design in Western Australian heritage, blending regional identity with Chevron's global brand. The result achieved WELL Platinum certification and a 6-Star Green Star rating, proof that sustainability and cultural authenticity could be designed in from the outset, not added afterward.

From brief to build: how a geographically fragmented Chevron workforce came together in one WELL Platinum, culturally grounded Perth headquarters.

Bringing Chevron's Perth headquarters to life meant balancing ambitious sustainability targets with deep cultural sensitivity. The design team sourced repurposed materials directly tied to Western Australian identity, including Bunbury Jetty timbers and Barrow Island core samples, embedding regional heritage into the building's fabric rather than treating it as decoration. Extensive Indigenous art collections were integrated throughout, developed to honour local culture authentically. Every design decision, from ergonomic workspaces to training and medical facilities, was made to support both employee wellbeing and long-term environmental performance. Throughout, Gensler worked closely with Whadjuk Noongar cultural architects, conducting research with Indigenous communities to ensure the design respected their traditions authentically.

Impact

Chevron's consolidated Perth headquarters now strengthens collaboration, community ties, and employee wellbeing, proving sustainability and cultural respect can coexist by design.

Training spaces, medical facilities, and culturally significant artwork promote genuine belonging, while WELL Platinum and Green Star certification prove environmental commitments were kept.
