Opportunity

Across the U.S., airports are grappling with surging passenger demand while aging infrastructure struggles to keep pace.

Concourses built decades ago for smaller aircraft and fewer travelers no longer meet today’s expectations. Reno-Tahoe International Airport faced an urgent challenge: by 2024, RNO was serving nearly 4.8 million passengers in concourses dating to the early 1980s. The airport needed a future-ready solution that would elevate airline and traveler experiences while expanding revenue through reimagined concessions, advertising, and gaming.

Why This Matters

  1. 01

    Dated Legacy Concourses

The airport needed to replace concourses built for smaller aircraft and earlier travel patterns with ones that could support larger planes, expanded amenities, and a better passenger journey. The new vision addresses the needs of the growing community, positioning the airport as a gateway that honors Reno's resilient past while embracing its future.

  2. 02

    Traveler Expectations Shifted

Undersized gates, limited concessions, and dated restrooms no longer match today's expectations for comfort, choice, accessibility, daylight, and connection.

  3. 03

Setting the Tone for an Aspirational Future

The new concourses create an opportunity to pair operational upgrades with a regional identity rooted in Northern Nevada's terrain, views, materials, and spirit. As an emerging tech hub and a growing destination for families, the region‘s character informed every design move. By integrating local businesses, culture, and the natural environment, the concourses set the tone for an aspirational future that reflects the essence of Northern Nevada and its community.

The most important part about these two new concourses is that they meet the needs of a growing community and an aviation system that has changed significantly since the 1970s.

Solution

The design introduces two new concourses with 24 gates, capable of accommodating larger aircraft while preserving the airport’s hallmark ease of travel.

A bold, rusted-metal roof signals arrival, while natural materials and masonry celebrate the region and convey a sense of place. Extensive glazing frames Sierra Nevada views while new skylights and expanded interior volume bring a sense of openness. The all-electric, sustainably designed concourses provide inclusive amenities such as nursing rooms and pet-relief areas. These thoughtful design enhancements reflect the community’s commitment to hospitality and accessibility.

From brief to build: how all-electric, next-generation concourses and nature-inspired design bring an aging airport to life.

The concept centers on capturing daylight and exceptional mountain views in every direction. Careful attention was given to minimize glare and heat gain, supported by a 15-foot southern overhang. Program elements are organized to maximize sightlines, while south-facing terraces encourage year-round use and extend the passenger experience outdoors.

Impact

The new concourses elevate the passenger journey with more spacious gate lounges, expanded local concessions, outdoor terraces, and modernized restroom amenities.

The airport’s new central utility plant is projected to reduce water consumption by 77% and cut energy use intensity by 50%, positioning RNO among the region’s most sustainable airports. By weaving together innovation, natural beauty, and cultural authenticity, the upgraded airport becomes a gateway that honors Reno’s resilient past while embracing its future.

What Changed Because of This

  1. 01

    Larger Gates

Gate lounge areas doubled, giving travelers more room to relax and choose from a wider range of seating options. Larger gates provide future flexibility, allowing the terminal to adapt to evolving needs.

  2. 02

    Increased Amenities

The number of concession areas doubled, and restroom/inclusive amenities grew 250%. New amenities include healthier food options, nursing rooms, pet relief areas, and adult changing rooms.

  3. 03

    Environmental Impact

The central utility plant (CUP) is projected to cut water consumption by 77% and reduce energy use intensity (EUI) by 50% over the existing concourses.
