Opportunity
Today’s neighborhood bar has to feel familiar and fresh, offering a place to gather while creating an experience worth remembering.
As neighborhood bars evolve into experiential destinations, they must offer something distinctive without losing the ease that makes them part of the community. In Chicago’s West Town, Bar Bambi set out to meet that challenge through an environment shaped by owner Katie Renshaw’s avant-garde sensibility. The design needed to express her ideas without resorting to literal storytelling, make the most of an existing industrial shell, and support different modes of socializing from early evening through late night.

The design is integral to our identity and working with Gensler helped us turn my eclectic ideas into a cohesive vision. They successfully brought together styles that inspired us, making it something visually delicious that every guest falls in love with.
Solution
Gensler translated Bar Bambi’s eclectic personality into an immersive interior that transforms alongside the energy and rhythm of the evening.
A sculptural bar serves as the room’s centerpiece, changing color throughout the evening and casting a glow across the interior. Reflective surfaces and a violet ceiling add depth and drama, while orb-like fixtures offer a subtle nod to the Bar Bambi name. Warm textures and custom furnishings soften the exposed industrial shell. Lounge-style seating accommodates everything from intimate conversations to high-energy nightlife, creating an inclusive setting that feels connected to the neighborhood and welcoming to everyone.
