Opportunity

DATALAND creates a permanent home for AI art, establishing a new cultural institution at the intersection of technology, creativity, and public life.

Artificial intelligence has reshaped how artists create, how audiences engage, and how culture evolves, yet no institution has existed to anchor that transformation in physical space. DATALAND answered that absence. Situated on Los Angeles’s Grand Avenue Cultural Corridor, the museum opened a permanent destination for AI-driven art at civic scale. For Refik Anadol Studio, it represents the realization of a long-held vision for a place where machine intelligence and human experience meet inside an environment that responds, breathes, and evolves in real time.

Why This Matters

  1. 01

    A New Cultural Category

DATALAND has established AI arts as a discipline worthy of permanent institutional recognition and dedicated space.

  2. 02

    Art That Responds to People

By making visitors active participants who shape the work in real time, DATALAND expands what art can do and who it belongs to.

  3. 03

Los Angeles as a Global Stage

Anchoring the world’s first Museum of AI Arts on the Grand Avenue Cultural Corridor positions Los Angeles as the defining city for the convergence of technology and contemporary culture.

Solution

The architecture becomes invisible infrastructure, so the art is the only environment the visitor ever sees or feels.

Gensler designed DATALAND from the artwork outward. Rather than fitting immersive technology into a conventional gallery shell, the team engineered architecture and systems as a single, unified instrument. A pixel-based geometric motif deployed across walls, ceilings, and structural elements dissolves the boundary between building and artwork. An overhead catwalk conceals and organizes projection, audio, and data infrastructure, keeping every technical system out of the visitor’s field of view. The result is five galleries where spatial design, real-time data, and machine intelligence operate as one continuous, responsive environment.

From brief to build: a process that began with the art and data systems, then built the architecture around them.

Gensler coordinated architecture, AV, lighting, acoustics, sensing, and software as one integrated system from the earliest design stages. Every decision, from structural coordination to finish selection, was evaluated against a single standard: does this serve the art, or does it compete with it? Visible infrastructure was removed wherever possible. The building’s systems were routed, concealed, and calibrated so that the visitor encounters only the work, never the machinery behind it.

Impact

DATALAND opened in June 2026, immediately establishing a new benchmark for what immersive cultural institutions can achieve.

Five galleries, 25,000-square-feet, and more than 1.5 billion pixels deliver an experience that no prior museum typology has offered.

What Changed Because of This

  1. 01

    The Visitor Becomes the Art

At DATALAND, visitors don’t observe art from a distance. Their presence, movement, and emotion actively shape the responsive environment around them, making every experience singular and unrepeatable.

  2. 02

    Architecture as a New Medium

DATALAND establishes a design typology in which architecture, real-time data, machine intelligence, and digital media are not separate disciplines but are one unified living system.

  3. 03

A Cultural Landmark for Los Angeles

DATALAND anchors a new chapter on the Grand Avenue Cultural Corridor, adding a globally significant institution to a city already defined by its creative ambition and cultural diversity.

FAQ

01

Where is DATALAND located?

DATALAND is located at 100 South Grand Avenue in Downtown Los Angeles, California. It sits on the Grand Avenue Cultural Corridor, one of Los Angeles’s most significant civic and cultural destinations, alongside the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Broad.

02

Who designed DATALAND?

Gensler led the architecture and design of DATALAND. The museum was commissioned by Refik Anadol Studio, co-founded by artist and director Refik Anadol and Efsun Erkiliç.

03

What is the Museum of AI Arts?

DATALAND is the world's first Museum of AI Arts. It is a permanent cultural institution dedicated to art created through artificial intelligence and machine learning. It is not a temporary exhibition or a technology showcase, but a fully realized museum that treats AI-generated art as a serious, enduring cultural form deserving of dedicated institutional space.

04

How does the architecture support the experience?

Gensler designed the architecture to function as invisible infrastructure for the art. A pixel-based geometric motif unifies walls, ceilings, and structural elements, dissolving the boundary between building and artwork. An overhead catwalk conceals all projection, audio, and data systems, so visitors encounter only the immersive environment.

05

How large is DATALAND?

DATALAND spans approximately 25,000-square-feet across five immersive galleries. The largest space, the Data Pavillion, houses 84 4K projectors and a 250-speaker audio system, creating one of the most technically sophisticated immersive environments in the world.
