Opportunity

Digital-first brands face a defining challenge when going global: translating a vivid online identity into a physical space people actually want to work in.

Gensler's 2025 Global Workplace Survey found that just 14% of workers want a traditional corporate environment; most crave nature retreats, creative labs, and spaces that feel like home. For Pinterest, strengthening its Australian footprint meant meeting that expectation in an entirely new cultural context. The team needed a workplace rooted in Australian identity that reflected the platform's ethos of creativity and personal inspiration, not a generic outpost of a global brand, but a space that felt genuinely of its place while staying unmistakably Pinterest.

Why This Matters

  1. 01

    Brand Meets Place

Translating Pinterest's visual, deeply personal brand into a physical Australian workplace meant the design had to work on two levels at once: authentically local, unmistakably Pinterest.

  2. 02

    Beyond the Traditional Office

With only 14% of workers wanting a conventional corporate environment, Pinterest needed a workplace bold enough to draw the talent, Sydney's competitive market demands.

  3. 03

    A Launchpad for Growth

Sydney marked a strengthening of Pinterest's Australian presence, meaning the workplace needed to signal ambition and permanence, not just accommodate a growing local team.

Inspired by the vibrancy of Australia’s colourful landscapes, our Sydney office is a one-of-a-kind space for creativity and collaboration…This new space isn’t just an office, it’s a launchpad for growing Pinterest’s business and community in Australia.

Solution

Rather than default to brand guidelines, Gensler translated Australia's own landscapes into four distinct zones, each telling its own story.

Inspired by Dorothea Mackellar's poem My Country, Gensler designed four themed zones, each capturing a distinct Australian landscape. Warm, earthy tones evoke Uluru's red centre; lush greens bring the Daintree Rainforest to life; soft coastal hues recall Byron Bay; while classic tiles and breezy arches nod to Bondi Pavilion. More than 10 floor finishes weave these zones into one cohesive space. Indigenous artworks and Australian-designed furniture, sourced on Pinterest itself, ground the design further, blending personal storytelling with Pinterest's brand promise to "create a life you love."

Finishes

From brief to build: how a global brand's Sydney studio became a physical journey through Australia's landscapes and culture.

Realising Pinterest's vision meant close collaboration from day one. Gensler worked alongside Pinterest's global team, local delivery partners, and consultants to translate a US-based brand into a space that felt authentically Australian. Early-stage challenges included producing detailed drawings before design documentation was finalised ,and prototyping bespoke joinery to meet Pinterest's exacting standards. Each zone was developed as its own design story, from material selection to custom furniture, ensuring the final space read as one cohesive journey rather than four disconnected rooms.

Impact

The result is a space that's unmistakably Pinterest, yet deeply Australian, honouring the country's cultural and ecological heritage at every turn.

Flexible environments and quiet retreat zones give employees, creators, and collaborators a workplace that acts as both extension of home and stage for ideas.

What Changed Because of This

  1. 01

    Brand Expression

The office became a physical extension of Pinterest's platform, translating its visual, inspiration-driven identity into a space people move through daily.

  2. 02

    Cultural Grounding

By honouring Australian landscapes and Indigenous artwork, the workplace gave a global brand a genuinely local sense of belonging.

  3. 03

    Growth and Community

The space positions Pinterest for its next phase of growth in Australia, acting as a springboard for creativity and community.

Lisa Munao

Pinterest's Sydney studio proves that great design doesn't just represent a brand, it translates it. We didn’t want to build another global office; we wanted a space that felt unmistakably Pinterest and deeply Australian, one that turns identity into everyday inspiration.
