At Southwestern College, just southeast of San Diego, the campus lacked a singular destination where students could connect and access the resources essential to their success. From brief to build: how campus movement, program mapping, and indoor-outdoor connections shaped a student union designed as both destination and connector.
The design team began by studying how students moved across campus, where activity already concentrated, and which services needed stronger visibility. Those observations helped shift the brief from a stand-alone student center to a connective campus framework. Program adjacencies were tested against daily student routines, placing dining, wellness, culinary arts, and gathering spaces where they could support both planned use and informal overlap. The atrium and outdoor town square emerged from that process as organizing tools, not just signature spaces.

By bringing together dining, academic support, wellness, and community spaces under one roof, the project transforms the daily student experience into one defined by openness and belonging.
