Opportunity

The Chargers needed a headquarters worthy of their ambitions to attract talent, anchor the franchise, and define its future.

For today’s leading athletes, physical performance is only half of the game. Beyond weight rooms and regulation practice fields, world-class teams require dynamic spaces that promote bonding and thoughtful features that nurture individual players’ mental well-being. Delivering on these physical and mental needs allows teams to unlock their full protentional, on and off the field.

Why This Matters

  1. 01

    Anchoring the Franchise

Establishing a permanent South Bay campus gives the franchise a civic address and a foundation for community investment.

  2. 02

    Attracting Elite Talent

A world-class facility signals organizational commitment. For the Chargers, building a headquarters that players and coaches would choose over any other in the league was essential for long-term competitiveness.

  3. 03

    Elevating Fan and Media Relationships

A facility designed for media engagement and public programming transforms a training campus into a platform, growing its Los Angeles fan base.

The goal is for the Chargers to become the standard of excellence in the NFL. This new facility demonstrates our organization’s commitment to that standard.

Solution

Gensler organized the entire campus around the idea that every function a player needs is available through intuitive paths that serve performance.

The design places locker rooms, training spaces, medical and rehabilitation facilities, meeting rooms, and practice fields in direct, legible sequence. Players move from recovery to preparation to the field without friction. The three natural-grass practice fields anchor the site, while the approximately 143,500-square-foot training building wraps around them with a 7,000-square-foot weight room, a two-lane lap and rehabilitation pool, hydrotherapy and recovery suites, and a two-story team meeting room. Shared spaces, including a rooftop hospitality club, and elevated outdoor terrace, and dining operated by Wolfgang Puck Catering, encourage informal connection alongside high-intensity work.

From brief to build: five years of site selection and design collaboration produced a campus organized precisely around the daily rhythms of professional football.

The Chargers evaluated dozens of potential sites before committing to the former Raytheon South Bay campus in El Segundo. That choice brought logistical complexity. One corner of the practice fields sit adjacent to an active Metro K Line rail corridor, requiring careful construction coordination. Gensler’s design process kept football operations at the center of every decision, integrating player development, strength and conditioning, medical care, coaching, media production, and hospitality into a single coherent building.

Impact

Upon opening, The Bolt registered as one of the premier professional sports facilities in the United States.

Players and civic leaders alike recognized the campus as a turning point, establishing the Chargers as a permanent presence in Los Angeles.
