A growing regional bank needed to unite dispersed teams, strengthen culture, and attract future talent while honoring its longstanding community legacy in its new headquarters.

For more than 75 years, Jefferson Bank has built its reputation as a trusted San Antonio institution. As the organization expanded across multiple locations, leadership recognized an opportunity to create a centralized workplace that would strengthen culture, improve connectivity, and support future growth. The challenge was balancing a traditional office environment with evolving employee expectations for flexibility, collaboration, and wellness. The new headquarters needed to foster belonging, accommodate projected growth, and position the bank competitively for the next generation of talent.

Solution

A vertically connected workplace organized around shared destinations transforms traditional banking culture into a more collaborative and equitable employee experience.

Gensler reimagined Jefferson Bank’s workplace through a hybrid open-plan strategy that significantly reduced private offices and prioritized shared environments. Operations and administrative teams occupy open work neighborhoods supported by huddle rooms, focus spaces, and conference rooms. A centrally positioned reception area, community room, and work café create vibrant destinations that encourage interaction throughout the organization. Interconnecting stairways physically link key workplace levels, promoting movement, visibility, and spontaneous collaboration while maintaining dedicated privacy for executive and private banking functions.

From brief to build: translating employee insights, operational needs, and future growth goals into an interconnected workplace experience.

The design process began with extensive research and employee engagement. Through Gensler's Workplace Performance Index survey, the team gathered detailed feedback related to performance, behavior, culture, and workplace experience. These insights informed departmental planning, growth forecasting, and workplace adjacencies. Strategic placement of shared amenities established a central hub accessible to all teams, while circulation planning balanced openness with security requirements for private banking clients. The result is a workplace that reflects both operational efficiency and human-centered design.

Impact

A new headquarters strengthens culture, elevates employee experience, and creates a flexible platform for Jefferson Bank’s continued growth.

By bringing teams together around shared destinations, the workplace fosters engagement, collaboration, and a stronger sense of belonging.
